Sporades Islands

Alonissos is  located in the eastern part of the Sporades islands, 3 km east of the island of Skopelos. The main harbour of the island is Patitiri port where it was chosen due to its  natural harbour. After a massive earthquake in 1965 - local people moved from Chora (which is the old village) down to Patitiri which is the first place you visit at your arrival. In these days Patitiri is the biggest village and the capital, and provides most of the nightlife of the island, with several clubs, restaurants and bars.
Alonisos is definitely not a party island, but the evenings are really nice both in Patitiri and the old village. Good music, a cold drink sitting by the sea in Patitiri or with the stars above your head and sea far below you in Chora are unforgettable experiences. The island is made mostly out of limestone.Good beaches are in short supply on Alonissos and most are small and steeped in stone. Few have more than the basic facilities and many can be difficult to find.
What visitors should not miss, is that the island is part of NMPAMS (National Marine Park of Alonissos) which is the first park to be founded at Greece. This Park covers six small islands (Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Skantzoura, Piperi) and 22 islands and searocks without inhabitation, with Alonissos being the largest island. One of the most famous part of the NMPAMS is the program of protection of Monk Seals which is a marine mammal belonging to the seal family, one of the largest seal species in the world, with a length up to 3 metres and an weight about 250 kg. It is an animal of considerable intelligence and charm.

The island of Skiathos is located near to Skopelos and has two major towns - Skiathos (named same as the island) and Koukanaries - the other settlements of the island are Kanapitsa and Troullos. Skiathos is the most western island of the Northern Sporades the total size is about 42 km (sq) - the population of the island is about 5000 - of course in the season it rapidly rises due to the tourists.

It is a lush, green island with over 60 beaches, including famous nudist Banana beach at the end of island for visitors of naturist lifestyle and Koukonaries beach, one of Greece's most famous beaches - a long sandy beach with beautiful surroundings, taverns, snack bars and water sports. Nearly all the beaches have a place offering lunch and many have windsurfing rental and various other watersport options. Depending on where you stay, you can have a quiet, relaxing holiday or a more active one doing excursions, sports and enjoying the nightlife.

Skiathos is enjoying a tourism boom as it is conisidered as one of the most developed islands of Sporades in meaning of services and infrastructure. However even extremely popular and often crowded it have not lost its great beauty and is one of the most attractive destinations in the region. Visitors can also visit its beautiful monasteries - Evangelistra, Kounistra, Xaralambros and Kechria. All these monasteries are very important to people of Skiathos as they are remains of their history and spirit that suffered during the ages

The island has a population of only around 6,000 with most living in the capital. It has an area of around 60 square miles and is situated between Skiathos & Alonnissos. It is known to Greeks as the island of green and blue because of the forests that cover much of the island, coming right down to the waters edge. Olive and plum groves and pine forest make up much of thhe lush, green interior. Hillsides are dotted with domes of churches and monasteries - there is said to be one for every day of the year - and, if you can avoid the heat soaked months of July and August, there are many pleasant walks to be had.

The island of Skopelos is characterized by its long beaches and coves surrounded by pine tree forests and offering crystal blue or emerald waters. Most of the beaches are located on the south-west coasts. The most famous of the island are Panormos  and Milia. Other beaches are: Agios Ioannis, Elios, Glyfoneri, Glysteri, Hovolo and others... The area is a real Greek paradise for those who own a boat where it proposes many secluded idyllic coves with fine sand and crystalline waters that are only accessible by the sea. Skopellos beaches tend to be more tranquil and less crowded and the further you get from the capital the more peaceful they become

Getting to the island is usually by flights to Skiathos direct from the UK and Italy in the summer months or by connections through Athens or Thessalonika. Once on the island travel is easy as there is an excellent bus service, car hire, motorbikes, push bikes, taxis and of course, boats.

Skyros is situated between the islands of the North Sporades, and the neighbourng island of Evia ( Euboea ). The landscape of Skyros is the perfect combination of sea and mountains, where the green and colours blend together perfectly. Some geologists claim that Skyros was made up of three islands that were joined together. There is some evidence that this may be true as there are many differences in the geographical features in various parts of the island. In the north it is thickly forested, in the south bare and rocky and in the center of Skyros there is a channel 3 kilometers wide. The island is 210 square kilometers and is surrounded by a large number of small islands and rocky islets.

The capital of the island is Skyros, which is also called Chora by the locals and this is where most of the amenities and modern facilities are concentrated. It is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill under the shadow of a medieval castle and the Byzantine monastery of Saint George of Skyros. It is a typical island city with Agean - style architecture with its own particular color. The beauty of the town with its white, cube - shaped houses and dark - colored roofs makes a great impression on the visitor.

Skyros is home to some of the most beautiful and famous beaches in all of Greece. The long sandy beach that stretches across the coastal towns of Molos and Magazia is one such example. Most beaches of Skyros are isolate and offer plenty of calmness to its visitors. The most famous beaches of Skyros are Agios Fokas, Atsitsa and Pefkos. Some are pretty difficult to access but they are all scenic. The most organized beaches are Molos and the beach of Skyros town. All the rest are quite isolate, so you need to bring your own supplies with you.

Skyros can be reached by car ferry twice a day from Kymi on Evia - The ferry can be connected by a bus from Athens. You can also get to the island through flights three times a week.
